Ash Wednesday 17 February, 2010
Ash Wednesday reminds me of how tremendously powerful ritual is in our lives. I went to an Ash Wednesday service at lunch to day and sat there with the smell of candles and incense swirling, the power of stained glass windows, the powerful sacred architecture of stone stirring memories of a lifetime. I remembered my first Communion, Confirmation, Advent, Lent, Easter and the immense glue of these rich traditional rituals provided to me in a very unstable life. The liturgy was not with my adult theology but I surrendered my intellect and reasoning to immerse my soul in the power of thousands of years of ritual and to the loving feeling of community and grace. I am choosing this Lent to commit to more meditation and prayer for the next 40 days and to do more intentional examen of my life. It is time to go deeper within to reground, renew and regenerate the soul. That is what Lent is all about to me. 40 days of intentional introspection, committing to new spiritual practices and learning to love oneself and others more. Blessings to all this Lent. I hope this 40 days will transform your life.
