Why Play?
|
Why not? Play is one of the greatest stress reducers we know. Play is a natural state of health for both mind and body. Emerging scientific research tells us that play is an essential element for stress management and balance in our life.
What is Play?
Playing is having fun, participating in any activity that makes you feel young, active, happy and creates laughter and a sense of well-being. We learn to play when we‘re young as part of developing the mind and body for adulthood. As adults, many of us stop playing because we‘re too busy, but playing provides extraordinary preventative and restorative health benefits to the brain at every age.
Benefits of Play:
- HEALTH - When we play we laugh, and laughing reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, produces happy hormones, increases muscle flexion and boosts immune function.
- PRODUCTIVITY - All work and no play makes you dull! We know that people who play just five minutes, twice-a-day have higher productivity and creativity than those who keep their nose to the grindstone.
- OUTLOOK - Overall, play increases energy and produces endorphins that deliver an overall sense of happiness and well being. It‘s an anecdote to anxiety and stress. Play can actually ward off the hormones that cause anger, fear and anxiety.
- RELATIONSHIPS - A family that plays together stays together.™ Play connects you to your kids, and even better, connects your kids to you - building strong family ties.
- LEARNING - Play helps us exercise the brain by problem solving and stimulating curiosity, discovery and creativity. Play positively affects the development of the brain in children and adults alike.
When Should I Play?
Every two-to-four hours schedule some form of play into your day. Keep a small basketball hoop in your office, invest in a indoor golf green with a club, or make an online game sites like the Play Room or Pogo.com one of your favorites on your computer. Then commit to just five minutes of play, once or twice a day.
