New Year New You!


Kathleen‘s Mindful Message

Thank heaven 2009 is over and done.  Life is a series of cycles.  I am so glad my cycle of loss is over this time.  2010 is the year of community and joy.  Whatever happens, whatever cards the universe deals me, my intention is resolute.  I am rooting my life in the miracle and love of relationships and I am committed to experiencing joy each day of my life.  No matter what disasters may be on the horizon or life challenges are lurking around the corner, the power of community, (discovered in people, animals and nature), will be my tap root, the foundation of my life.
We are changing the organization and goals of our mindful living companies in the next few months.  We are focusing on the critical nature of community in our companies.  Please stay tuned as we change the Mindful Living Network®. We are the source for Mindful Living®.  This will involve multiple platforms such as lifelong learning classes, products, social networks, speaking and corporate consulting, television and radio shows.  Please join us and we welcome your input.  Please let me know your thoughts and participation. Take Back Your Life In 2010


Why is it that most of us fail to keep their New Year resolutions? We are so overbooked, overworked and overwhelmed, our resolutions just become another "wish" list for a new life of happiness and peace that continues to elude us. "Before setting your goals for 2010, it is important to take a snapshot of 2009," says Kathleen Hall, C.E.O. of The Stress Institute and The Mindful Living Network, "Most of us are tired of living our precious lives like Billy Murray in the movie Groundhog Day."  

Here are some tips to create your life of happiness in 2010


1.    Create:  A theme for 2010
What would you like to be your greatest triumph in 2010?  Name 2010 with one word that would describe what you want this year to embody?  (For example: Forgiveness, Success, Prosperity, Love)  What word would you use to describe your experience of last year, 2009?

2.    Choose: Concrete goals
Choose only three things you would like to create in your life this year. Write them down.  Commit with a ritual or ceremony to symbolize your commitment.   Make a step by step plan.  Assess your goals every week.
(For example:  new job, better marriage, reduce my debt, getting healthy).
3.    Reinforce: Your new practices
Create an intention statement or a positive affirmation. This creates energy, focus, and confidence in your goal. Repeat it often during your busy day. Stick notes along your daily routine- on the mirror, refrigerator, in your car, or on your computer.  (For example: Life is good, I am healthy and strong).

4.    Remind: Your self
Use physical, sensory reminders that reinforce your memory.  Look at and feel wristbands, a bracelet or beads.  Listen to motivational music or tapes of inspirational people you enjoy.  Keep a journal on paper or online to reflect on your growth each day.  Focus on the positives.  Create rituals that reinforce change and new habits.
 
5.    Connect: With community
There is increasing scientific evidence that your community keeps you healthy.  Enlist support from friends and family. Create a buddy system with someone you trust to make sure you keep on track.  Join online groups and blog lists.

6.    Stress: Reduce and manage it
Stress forces us back into old habits.  Become aware of what triggers your stress.  Each time some event or person hits your stress trigger, practice stress reduction techniques.  Take SELF care time for a few minutes every day.  Do something fun and play at least once a day.

So many of us go from one year to the next without stopping for reflection on the year of our lives we have completed.  For many years I have done an exercise for the completion of each year and I create intentions for the new year.  It is a beautiful rich path to a life well lived.  I invite you to participate in the following Old Year/ New Year Evaluation.

Life on the Farm at Oak Haven

I took this photo as the sun was setting and the temperature was 25 degrees.  The lake was speckled with the new waves of migrating ducks that rest on our lake this time of year.  I tried to get Luna and Luke, our beloved horse couple, in the photo, but you can‘t see them grazing through the fog on the lake.  Yes it is January at Oak Haven.  I just got back from feeding 20 horses, 7 dogs, 10 cats and enumerable birds.  They are all scattered at different locations on the farm.  The most challenging job in January is keeping the ice broken on the horse‘s troughs so they can get to water.  We keep a hammer by each trough so we can break open the ice several times a day.  It has been below 20 degrees so the horse‘s water continues to freeze throughout the day.  Throwing hay with the wind blowing in this freezing cold for all the horses is also a frigid task. I love the farm this time of year.  There is something fierce and rugged that January brings out in me that I love and respect.  Experiencing the raw power of nature is exhilarating and challenges me to be strong and authentic.  Grab your coat and gloves and get outside.  Mother nature is challenging you to discover realms of yourself that may have been slumbering your entire life.
